  1. Why Does My Dog Jump on Everyone-and How Do I make It Stop?

Why Does My Dog Jump On Everyone - and How Do I Make It Stop?

If your dog rushes the door every time a guest arrives, you're not alone. Jumping is one of the most common behavior challenges dog owners face — and the good news is, it's also one of the most fixable. With a little consistency and patience, you can teach your dog a much more polite greeting.

Why Do Dogs Jump in the First Place?

Dogs jump because it works. When your dog was a puppy, jumping up probably earned them attention, laughter, or even a cuddle. Over time, they learned that jumping = good things. Even pushing them down or saying "No!" can accidentally reinforce the behavior — because any attention feels like a reward to an excited dog. What to Do Instead  - The key is to remove the reward and redirect to a behavior you love. Here's a simple approach that works:

1. Turn away completely. The moment your dog jumps, cross your arms, turn your back, and give zero eye contact. No words, no pushing — just silence and withdrawal. You're communicating: jumping makes me disappear.

2. Wait for four paws on the floor. The second all four paws land, turn back, get calm, and give quiet, gentle praise. Keep your energy low — excitement fuels more jumping.

3. Ask for a sit. Once your dog understands that four paws = attention, level up by asking for a sit before greeting. A dog who is sitting cannot be jumping!

4. Be consistent — every single time. This is the part most people find hardest. Every person who interacts with your dog needs to follow the same rules. One excited "it's okay, I don't mind!" from a guest can undo a week of training.

A Gentle Reminder

Please don't punish your dog for jumping. They're not being bad - they're being enthusiastic and social. Your job is simply to show them a better way to say hello. Dogs genuinely want to get it right. They just need us to show them how.
